Here's something I've been thinking about lately as there has been much talk recently of racism, sexism, xenophobia etc... in the news as of late.
First off, I think prejudice (pre-judging someone based on background or skin color) more accurately describes what we commonly refer to as 'racism' because scientifically it's been proven we are all one 'human race'
That being said, I think there is an easy test to see if something is 'racist' or not. This could also be used as a sexism test.
It's quite simple. You just take the incidence in question and apply it to different situations.
For example; Is the name (and logo) of the NFL's Washington Redskins racist?
The NFL's commissioner Roger Goodell thinks not. The owner of the team Dan Snyder thinks not. They claim that MOST Native Americans are not offended by the name, which is a terrible argument because SOME Native Americans ARE offended so??
So here is my test. Apply it to different situations...
Could you have a team called the Washington Yellowskins?
Could you have a team called the Washington Blackskins?
I shudder to think what these team logos would look like.
I think MOST of you would agree that NO, you could not in this day and age have a team with any of those names because it would be RACIST AF.
So, by using my easy test one can determine that YES, having a team called the Washington Redskins IS RACIST. The name should be changed.
Wanna try another one?
Major League Baseball has a team called the Cleveland Indians. Now, aside from the fact that the name is inherently racist because Native Americans are not 'Indian' let's do the test.
Could you have a team called the Cleveland Africans?
How about the Cleveland Mexicans?
Again, I shudder to think what their team logos would look like.
It's really a basic, easy test. I can't understand how people don't get this. I think that is the 'white privilege' that many people from the U.S. have. People aren't racist to you, so therefore you think racism doesn't exist.
All you have to do is take one minute to imagine what it would be like if you had been born somewhere else, raised a little differently, if your appearance was a little different. It's not even empathy really, it's almost a lack of imagination.
Anyways, that's my test. Maybe I'll turn it into a regular blog as different topics come up in the news. The sexism test is much the same. You see someone behaving a certain way towards a woman. You ask yourself; would I be okay with that behavior if that was a man? Or vice versa.
